Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS)

This program allows foreign children who are inside the United States and who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents, and are unable to be reunited with either parent, to obtain a green card.

Children who obtain green cards through this process are able to permanently live and work in the United States without fear of deportation or removal.  Important considerations for this benefit are that a child who obtains SIJS is thereafter unable to petition for a green card for a parent, nor can the child petition for brothers or sisters until becoming a U.S. citizen.   Still, this can be a powerful immigration benefit for a child who qualifies.
